Reviews
"Excellent little cafe in Treme. The calas are tasty by themselves and the sauces served with them are divine. The proprietor is very friendly. He greeted us at our table and gave a great history of calas' significance in New Orleans history. Payment is easy (cash, CashApp, or Venmo). Playing tourist, we had beignets in the Quarter, but the calas are so much tastier."
"Calas are delicious and the people are soooo nice!!"
"What a great treat. You must find this gem in the Treme area when you visit New Orleans. Let Brandon tell you all about the Calas. This is an updated version of a traditional treat from years gone by. Hard to find but worth it. Ours was served with lemon curd. Yum!"
"The proprietor is full of energy about the place, food is great, overall awesome vibe. The he coffee is also fantastic, it’s got a nutty/ vanilla flavor."
"The Calas Cafe is much more than just a place to try a great new treat. The enthusiasm of the owner is absolutely contagious. In Spanish ruled New Orleans it was possible for enslaved people to buy their freedom. One method they used was by making and selling calas. The calas looks similar to a beignet, but is made from rice. These treats are made on site, served hot and quite enjoyable. This is a great place to sample some historic New Orleans culture in the Treme."
