About the Business

Wilderness Battlefield

Wilderness Battlefield, located at 35347 Constitution Highway in Orange, Virginia, is a historic institution that preserves the memories of the Civil War battles that took place in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. This battleground serves as a stark reminder of the tragic cost of the war, with a town bombarded and looted, farms destroyed, and thousands of refugees forced into the countryside. The site saw over 85,000 men wounded and 15,000 killed, many of whom remain in unknown graves.

Teachers planning a field trip can take advantage of the educational resources provided by Wilderness Battlefield, including trail maps and Junior Ranger books for each battlefield. Visitors can also watch park films or browse through a library of videos to learn more about the historical significance of the area.

Ellwood Manor, a key location within the battlefield, has a rich history as a slave plantation, field hospital, US headquarters, and the burial site of Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson's arm. The house near Guinea Station where Jackson died after the Battle of Chancellorsville is also preserved within the institution. Additionally, visitors can explore Chatham Manor, a slave plantation, Civil War headquarters, and hospital that has overlooked Fredericksburg since 1771.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, a teacher, or simply curious about America's past, Wilderness Battlefield offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the stories of the Civil War and the individuals who shaped its outcome.

"This place is very special to our family as my son’s great great great grandfather was captured at this battle. We learned so much here. The rangers at the visitor center were so excited to see all the information we had on his capture and fate. We are so glad the NPS has preserved this place!"

"Historical battlefield consisting of multiple stops and several walking trails. Something for multiple interests. A bit smokey with the drifting smoke from the Canadian wildfires but still with it. If you aren't interested in the historical views go for the exercise and nature."

"My visit was in late April during the off season. Two things to know before visiting are it lacks bathrooms or potable water. The information pavilion was educational, but the paper maps were out. It was frustrating to explore the battlefield only to have hike back to the information pavilion for context. I would recommend stopping at Chancellorsville' visitor center because they have a map holder on the outside of the visitor center. In addition to Wilderness, this map has information on the Battle of the Chancellorsville, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Court House, and Fredericksburg."

"This battlefield stands exactly as it was in May 1864. If you’re looking for lots of monuments and great vistas this is not the place for you. But if you want to understand the incredible sacrifices made here both by Union and Confederate forces and the leadership and battle skills necessary to prevail by the Union officers on a confusing and unforgiving battlefield, come here. The woods caught fire and with rifle smoke from thousands of men firing at close range the fighting became desperate. All that is still here and can be felt as you pass through the now quiet and peaceful countryside."

"Battle of the wilderness .Seems like a chill area to hike. Only made it to the beginning of the trailhead. I wasn't trying to hike this time. Extremely informative. So happy we got more flatter lands than we did back then. Cuz wow that battle sucked. This exhibit/trail is along the Unions battle trail."
