About the Business

Wharton Esherick Museum

The Wharton Esherick Museum, located in Malvern, Pennsylvania, is a unique institution celebrating the creative energy and rhythmic movements that influenced the work of American artist Wharton Esherick. As a museum and tourist attraction, the WEM offers a variety of programs, exhibitions, and events throughout the year that focus on art interacting with the rhythms of the natural world and the human body.

Visitors can explore Esherick's handcrafted Studio, where his sense of rhythm is evident in every detail, from his wood sculptures to the organic patterning of the building exterior. The museum's spring exhibition, "Movement is Life," kicks off a year of programming that traces the thread of rhythms from the 1920s to the present.

For bookworms and Esherick fans, the museum offers "Off the Shelf," a book club with a twist that explores Esherick's legacy through his own bookshelves and recently published books. The museum also offers special tours like "Storytelling in the Studio," which provides a unique glimpse into Esherick's life and relationships through oral history accounts.

The Wharton Esherick Museum is a National Historic Landmark for Architecture, preserving the legacy of an artist who worked primarily in wood to create furniture, interiors, and more. Visitors can experience Esherick's hilltop studio/residence, filled with over 300 of his works, through guided tours that require reservations.

Whether you're interested in art, history, or simply looking for a unique and immersive experience, the Wharton Esherick Museum invites you to explore the legacy of this influential American artist.

"We were delighted to discover this historic hidden gem that is just a short drive from Philadelphia. We look forward to returning with friends to experience the artist Esherick's ingenuity and artistry. Our guide was excellent! He drew upon his expertise as a master wood craftsman to provide insight into Esherick's incredible unique talent. He encouraged our questions and did an exemplary job in answering them. It was a rare treat to experience an artist's works in the environment in which they were created. Advance reservations are required to explore this intimate space."

"Exploring Wharton Esherick’s Studio was a perfect way to get inspired to kick off the month of May. Esherick’s highly individual, hand-built Studio was constructed over a 40-year period beginning in 1926, incorporating Arts and Crafts, Expressionist, and organic designs. Function and sustainability was at the peak of what he was really about it."

"EXCELLENT LOCAL GEM practically in our backyard. We've driven by the sign for over 20 years, and finally made the decision to go. Really interesting story and beautiful sculptures. The tour guide provided lots of great information about Wharton Esherick's and his evolution in his art. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars, is because those with disabilities would not be able to access the house/ workshop. Part of the tour is going up some very narrow stairs. Well worth it, and very interesting. They can't really open it up without damaging the property, so I understand why they left things intact. I also felt very safe, because all tour members were required to wear a mask properly the entire time, and show proof of vaccination. They also kept the tour groups to 6 people or less."

"Just a lovely experience. The tour group was small in keeping with the cozy spaces we were visiting. It was an amazing and intimate view into a talented artist's craft and life. Just as a note, the tour may be challenging for those with mobility issues."
