Originally owned by Augustus Sherman, a prominent and generous figure in the region, the house served as the Greater Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center since 1962. The building, a classic example of Italianate Victorian architecture, was saved from demolition and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, thanks to the efforts of Harold Wakefield.
Today, the Sherman House continues to provide valuable services to seniors in the Glens Falls area and beyond. With a modern facility in the basement for special projects, the center offers a variety of programs and activities for those aged 50 and over. As a Member Agency of Tri-County United Way, the Sherman House relies on community support to maintain its services and preserve its historic landmark status.
