About the Business

The Samuel Slater Experience, located at 31 Ray Street in Webster, Massachusetts, is a unique museum and store that brings to life the rich industrial history of the area. The museum tells the story of Samuel Slater, who at the age of 14 became involved in the textile industry and eventually started his own cotton spinning business in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 1812, he moved his mills to Webster, Massachusetts, with the help of his friend Senator Daniel Webster, shaping the town into an industrial powerhouse.
By utilizing the water power of Webster Lake and the French River, Slater created a town focused on cotton and woolen manufacturing, attracting other businesses to the area. The museum showcases the contributions of Slater and his family to the growth of Webster, including the establishment of the first Sunday School in the area for mill workers' children.
Your support through donations will help shape the future of the museum and ensure that the history of Samuel Slater and the industrial heritage of the area are preserved for future generations. Visit the Samuel Slater Experience today to learn more about this fascinating piece of American history.
Reviews
"If I could give it more than 5 stars I would - this is one of the coolest museums I've ever been to. The technology used is impressive and makes for a truly interactive and submersive experience. The museum is huge, and you truly forget about the outside world - definitely plan on spending at least an hour and a half, it's really easy to lose track of time! The museum is huge - it's clean, and handicapped accessible. Highly recommended for all ages!"
"Absolutely a gem.. For both adults and older kids... Not just a history lesson on early New England cotton mills, but a very immersive tour of what took place during the early days and how Webster MA came to be as a MA town. Sittting in a restored trolley (that shook like it was moving) watching a moving full view screen moving through the town was my favorite. Worth the drive to Webster MA."
"This museum was extraordinary. To the boat rocking and water coming in your face like you were actually there with Slater, to seeing the theater and the old cars. This museum felt like something out of Disney in a lot of ways, and it was just awesome. If you like history, this will definitely be your thing."
"This museum is a hidden gem. Strongly recommend. Lot's to do for adults and kids. Plan on staying at least 1 1/2 hours. Admission only $10 for seniors."
"While visiting locally, I had some time to kill and was deciding between the Experience and a local art museum. Not knowing what exactly the Samuel Slater Experience had to offer, but hopeful from the positive reviews, my dad and I visited, and we were absolutely amazed. The exhibits were brilliantly designed and presented, and easily rival ones I’ve seen at major museums. With a wide variety of interactive portions, recreated town businesses, and great explainers, this is a great visit for adults and kids alike. We were very lucky to get a tour from one of the docents, who did an excellent job, and we learned a lot about the area. I spent the next day raving to anyone who would listen to me that they should visit. Also, Slater is 100% a traitor. It’s called corporate espionage."
