Skookum Kids is a foster care institution located at 316 McLeod Road in Bellingham, Washington, United States. Our mission is to mobilize communities in order to create a healthy foster care system.
When children enter foster care, it can be a scary and confusing time for them. That's why we provide a soft landing for them at our emergency shelter in Bellingham, helping to solve what we call "The 72 Hour Problem" by providing a stable environment and giving social workers time to make arrangements.
We also offer respite care for foster parents, allowing them to take breaks while ensuring the children in their care receive trusted and trauma-informed support. Our licensed respite caregivers and events like Foster Family Night Out help to provide this much-needed break for foster parents.
Foster parenting is a challenging but important role, and we make sure foster parents are well-prepared and supported with the help of our attentive team of Foster Care Specialists. We also work to facilitate visitation between children in foster care and their biological families, supporting family connections and reunification efforts.
In addition, we offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for those who want to help but may not know how. From one-time events to mentorship and becoming a licensed foster parent, there are many ways to get involved in our important work.
Our track record speaks for itself, with 87% of children who come through Skookum Kids eventually reunifying with their family of origin. We are constantly learning and growing with the help of our community partners and volunteers. Join us on this journey as we work together to create positive change for kids and families in need.
