Townsend Harbor Church, located at 80 Main Street in Townsend, Massachusetts, is a museum that showcases the rich history of the community spanning over three centuries. Founded in 1732 as a farming settlement, Townsend developed into a thriving community with industrial operations along the Squannacook River. The Townsend Historical Society, founded in 1896, works to preserve the memories and artifacts of the past. The society is headquartered in the c. 1790 Reed Homestead, a historic Federal-era dwelling in Townsend Harbor. The house, owned by the Reed family for five generations, is filled with thousands of artifacts that tell the story of the community's journey into the present. The society is supported by its members and welcomes visitors to explore the museum by appointment. Don't miss special events like the Annual Scarecrow Festival and Holiday Open House to experience the history of Townsend firsthand. Join us in preserving our community's history for generations to come.

"Back in the 70's I lived near this church. I joined the church, such as it was, a community of 6 or so very old people. We attempted to restore it as a community center. We held several public events, the most notable being an early music concert with the Quadrivium Ensemble, this was an exciting event, but it did not attract any support, so, the rest is history..."
"The Harbor church is one of several nearby buildings in Townsend Harbor that are owned by the Townsend Historical Society. The society hosts weekend events in better weather and they have an informative web site. While the interior is very plain it is well maintained and it is interesting to think of the old times when the building would be full of members from the local community celebrating their faith. Years ago the building hosted a Saturday Market that sold odds and it was easy to get a quick glimpse inside but now it is available by appointment through the Historical Society and the large room is available for events. Parking is available for the Squanacook River Rail trail that is open all the way to Townsend Center. Easy walk to the Historical Society's other buildings and nearby resturants."
