It has been such a comfort to know I can trust you with a precious heirloom and I value your sound advice on what needs to be done to make a piece useible again. I am thankful for your skill and care you put into all your work. I love working with old furniture, but I know where my talents end and where I need your skill! "We contacted The wood Shed to re-glue 3 dining room chairs and repair the base of a swivel rocker and re-upholster it. Since he was already here and this business touts they do antique restoration we decided to also have him replace the hinge on an antique cedar chest. He re-glued the chairs without any problems. He returned the lid to the cedar chest and put it on with a $5.00 gold colored, modern day, offset hinge. The original hinge was hammered copper. We did not expect him to find an original hinge to the one that was broken but thought he should the resources to better match what was there since he claims to restore antiques. Just a quick google search for antique, copper offset hinges shows many to choose from for about the same $5.00 as the modern day hinge. When he re-installed the lid it hit the framework of the chest. He said that was no big deal and I should just sand it down until it doesn't hit anymore. He said he couldn't do it because he didn't have any of his tools with him, not even a screw driver. He charged $125.00 for a $5.00 hinge and to remove and reinstall 12 screws. So we now have a lid that hits the framework of the chest, installed with a modern hinge on an antique chest and the suggestion of just sanding it down doesn't seem like a very good solution since that would leave raw wood exposed. As far as the swivel rocker he said he could repair the base, remove the upholstery and deliver the chair to an upholstery shop he could recommend. He called and told us when he had delivered the chair to the upholstery shop so we could pick out the material we wanted. The upholstery shop said it would take about 6 weeks to get the chair done. The chair came out fantastic. The upholstery shop called and said they could deliver the chair but and asked if we knew it needed a new swivel/rocker base and that the repair would cost a little over $100.00 more. Needless to say we were surprised by this since we had paid the Wood Shed $125.00 to repair the base. We spoke to Dave at the Wood Shed and asked why the base had not been fixed. He said he never looked the the swivel/rocker mechanism just the piece of wood the mechanism attached to. He said he didn't charge us for that but didn't have any real answer when confronted with the fact that without the base that allowed the chair to swivel and rock the chair was no longer a swivel rocker. He then just went on about how much time he had spent on removing the old upholstery and that was the main charge of 125.00 he put on the bill. We also confronted him on the charge for the inappropriate hinge for the cedar chest. Told him we were not expecting an antique hinge but a reproduction replacement that looked similar to the original. Told him what a simple google search produced for hinges. His response was we should order a hinge off the internet and he would stop by and put it on. Unscrewing and re-screwing 12 screws isn't exactly rocket science and doesn't require any special skills. Dave is not very professional. He attempted to get us to invest in One Coin Crypto Currency while re-installing the lid to the chest. He touted how much he had made on his investment in One Coin. When told it sounded like Bit Coin, a cyber currency that was exposed as a Ponzi scheme and went broke, he said this was different. That One Coin was started by an Asian lady who had it all figured out and he could get us in early so we could make a bundle.Just another simple google search and it shows One Coin was developed on Bulgaria and is nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. In conclusion, Dave at the Wood Shed does a decent job at re-gluing chairs but the rest of his work is sub-par at best. He tries to interest people in his One Coin investment and seems more interested in that than doing good work on the things he was hired to do."
