About the Business

Waterbird Regional Preserve

Waterbird Regional Preserve is a picturesque park and tourist attraction located at 2701 Waterfront Road in Martinez, California, United States. The preserve is open to visitors from November to February from 8am to 4pm, with extended hours in the spring and summer months. The park features a 198-acre wetland area known as Al McNabney Marsh, which is home to a diverse range of bird species.

Visitors can enjoy hiking along several miles of trails in the uplands area, with opportunities to spot waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. The park is a popular destination for birdwatchers, with the chance to see species such as American avocets, great blue herons, and white pelicans. The marsh area is part of the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds, making it a prime location for birdwatching during fall and spring migrations.

In addition to birdwatching, visitors can explore the history of the area, which was once inhabited by the Bay Miwok's Chupcan people. The park also features remnants of early 1900s housing sites and old roads made of "clinker" stones from smelting operations.

Please note that dogs are not permitted in Waterbird Regional Preserve to protect the fragile marsh ecosystem and nesting waterbirds. The park is accessible by car from Sacramento, San Jose, and Oakland, making it a convenient destination for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts alike.

"The natural setting is truly remarkable but the driveway around the parking lot has huge potholes."

"I’ve really enjoyed exercising on this trail especially during the pandemic, since the trail is very spacious and not very busy. I jog/hike twice around the loop trail for a good workout. I’m more excited about the cows, than the birds, that stay there some of the year."

"Awesome. Really easy access . A lot to see. Not a brutal hike but it will get you out. Just seen other parts of the area we grew up in. Grew up in Concord. Now live and Escobar street. Love Martinez.."

"Came here hoping to see birds, which I did, but the most interesting ones were in the waterways where I couldn't get close enough to see what they were. I did see quite a few Yellowtail Butterflies. Short hike with a hill and a lot of cow dung, but no cows during my visit. It's an industrial area which might explain the odd scent in the area. If I'm around this area again I will stop by."

"Bathroom. Picnic tables and benches with views. Short trail. Easy access to freeeway. Closes at sunset. Some cow patties on the trail. Egrets and many other water fowl. There was some trash around the park."
