Midwest Best Beef

Midwest Best Beef is a small family farm located in Holy Cross, Iowa, where we raise and market less than 100 beef per year to a select and loyal clientele. Our mission is to provide the highest quality Midwestern Angus beef free of added hormones, routine antibiotics, and animal by-products. We offer package bundles designed for families, as well as the option to build your own custom package. Buying in bulk allows for savings and custom processing. Our beef is locally raised, grass-fed, corn finished, aged, and state-inspected Natural Angus Beef. We pride ourselves on our strict vegetarian diet for our cattle and never give them animal by-products, routine antibiotics, or growth hormones. Our beef is dry-aged for superior taste and texture. "Do yourself a favor and adopt this family as your farmers! We used to live in Iowa City and we started purchasing from them during my pregnancy when I needed to supplement my diet with more iron. My husband and I spoke to them at the farmer’s market, and it became clear that this family was passionate about being your personal farmers. They also deeply care about their animals. We were touched by their commitment to providing their cows with a wonderful life, and the ways they do so. Also, their meat is truly superior in taste. We have since moved and now order from them and have it shipped, because we just can’t find anything comparable! So grateful to have Midwest Best Beef as our Farmers and hope to for a long time!!"

"High quality beef no question about it. I wish I could say the same for the quality of the butchering. Typically short ribs are cut parallel to the bone, these were cut flanken style with no indication of such. Not a huge problem as they’re still delicious when cooked right. As you can see one of the ribs was at least 90% fat the other wasn’t far behind. The third rib was what you’d expect from any butcher or grocery store. Obviously short ribs are a fatty cut but the fat shouldn’t far outweigh the meat. Price of $6/lb isn’t bad but I’d much rather pay $10-12 a lb to get meaty ribs like the only good one of the bunch."

"We are new to using Midwest Best Beef. Tried some from buying at Dubuque Farmers market, liked it, ended up buying a quarter. New York strip was amazing. So glad we chose Midwest Best Beef. As a added bonus we got a tour of their family farm."

"I've been buying beef from Dave and Annette for a few years now and have found the meat to be fantastic. For this review I wanted to tell about a brisket I bought. I needed a special brisket for a party I was having for my nephew who had just returned from a 1 year stint helping the Egyptian Navy. I asked Dave about getting a brisket and he gave me what would turn out to be the best brisket I've ever smoked ever. This meat cooked down over 10 hours and was by far the most moist, best cooking piece of meat I've done and I've done dozens. The flavor is where it really came through and I have to give the credit to the meat. It took the flavor of the smoke just right and the marbling melted down just right... My nephew was very happy with it as were all of the family. I still think it was so good it was likely illegal! It wasn't the cheapest brisket I've bought but it was the best by far. Give these folks a run. You won't be disappointed."

"Dave and Annette and family are awesome. We became a customer last year first via Csa, and then purchased a 1/4 of beef this winter. Every facet of the beef has been delicious (tender, juicy, delicious, and excellent marbling). Even more than that, they came through for us when we needed them most - derecho knocked out our power and I called and asked for help, and they let me bring all our freezer contents to them at a moments notice so it wouldn’t spoil, evening offering to turn on their walk in freezer at great cost to them on our behalf. Great beef, great people, no doubt we will use Midwest best for all our beef going forward!"
