About the Business

Carmel River State Beach

Carmel River State Beach, located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, is a picturesque mile-long beach on Carmel Bay. The beach features a bird sanctuary in a lagoon where visitors can observe a wide variety of waterfowl and song birds. The beach also offers panoramic views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is popular with scuba divers. However, swimming, wading, or walking near the sanctuary can be dangerous.

Please remember to keep your dog on a leash at all times while visiting the beach. As of September 16, 2014, beach fires are banned at Carmel River State Beach and other state beaches in the Monterey District to minimize fire dangers. State Park officials will issue warnings to first-time offenders and citations to repeat offenders. For cooking purposes, a raised and self-contained gas camp stove may be used.

To protect public safety and natural resources, California State Parks officials are enforcing regulations that prohibit fires on state beaches. Visitors are encouraged to help keep the beaches clean and safe for everyone. The Marine Protected Areas Coloring Book is available for students to learn about the rich diversity of plant and animal life in California's Marine Protected Areas.

There is no campground at Carmel River State Beach. For information on weddings and special events, please contact the Special Event Coordinator. The weather in the Monterey Peninsula can be changeable, so layered clothing is advised for visitors. Plan your visit to Carmel River State Beach to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of this coastal park.

"Beautiful beach with waves crashing in and lots of pelicans. Probably not the best for swimming but a great place to kick back and relax and have a picnic."

"I've been coming here for 20 years, and it's a great place to walk on the beach and take your kids to swim in the lagoon. The beach can be treacherous to swim in."

"1600 feeding frenzy at the beach. Monestary Beach. See this amazing place, but do not take your eyes off the surf in proximity to the beach. Be safe, please. It is amazing and beautiful."

"Really perfect place for kids to play. The water is warm and clean, and there are a lot of pelicans resting in the river. Besides, you may explore the sea creatures in the rock such as crabs, hermit crab, fish, and sea urchin. You can also relax and enjoy the sea view through the fun trail. The kids set the crabs and urchin free before we leave. The parking lot is with limited spots, but you can park along the street. The restroom is quite clean. The most important thing is that the signal here is strong."

"A gem of a beach at the end of scenic drive. It's changed somewhat for what I am guessing climate change. The river now runs through the sand. So there's not much room as there was. Parking lot is small. It's not overloaded with tourists like the other end of scenic. Still a nice place to hang out. Pics from 2020"
