About the Business

The Healthy Teen Project

The Healthy Teen Project, located in Los Altos, California, is a health institution specializing in eating disorder treatment for adolescents and their families. Offering Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, the institution takes a multidisciplinary approach to address physical, emotional, and nutritional health, as well as academic functioning and family and peer relationships. The goal of The Healthy Teen Project is to provide holistic care that supports adolescents and their families in finding new and healthy ways of living.

Teens with eating disorders and their families often feel isolated and alone, which is why The Healthy Teen Project provides structure and support through a teenager-only therapeutic environment. Family support and therapy are integral components of the program, along with group therapy sessions that allow teenagers to connect, relate, and receive much-needed support from peers facing similar challenges. The institution also offers experiential opportunities and behavioral approaches such as art therapy, yoga therapy, meal preparation, and restaurant exposures to help teens actively engage in their recovery process.

Testimonials from parents and former clients highlight the transformative impact of The Healthy Teen Project, with one parent expressing deep gratitude for the help their family received. The institution does not offer outpatient services, but provides direct admission to their Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adolescents in need of intensive treatment. Due to a high volume of inquiries, it may take a day or two for The Healthy Teen Project to respond to inquiries.

"We were only in this program for a few weeks since our daughter ultimately needed a higher level of care. But during the time that we were at HTP, we were so impressed with the level of individualized care that our daughter received. I totally agree with the other reviewer who said that other organizations pay lip service to providing a team-based approach but that HTP really delivers on that promise. Everyone on the team, including the therapist, nutritionist, medical doctor, psychiatrist and other staff and support staff were completely on the same page regarding our daughter’s status and needs. HTP maintained a continuous stream of open, ongoing communication with us and our daughter the entire time we were there and all of it was delivered with the highest level of expertise and compassion. They always made time to help us, answer our many questions, and fully supported us until we were able to transition out of the program. I am so thankful for this organization and the people who work for it."

"HTP took the time to get to know our child and our family, incorporating our experiences with mental health and therapy before creating the right plan forward. We knew going in that wait lists are long; the estimate that they gave us was accurate and they provided guidance for how to care for and support our child in the interim. Our time at HTP was during the height of the pandemic. Their protocols were good and care went uninterrupted thanks to their ability to quickly pivot to online when needed. (Though, I think everyone would agree that in-person is the best approach.) HTP worked closely with us on a transition plan after the program and we're happy to say that our child is thriving three years later."

"I'm incredibly grateful for the compassionate, high-quality care provided to my teen (and our entire family) by the Healthy Teen Project. In particular, many medical systems pay lip service to having a team-based approach; at HTP, every member of my child's care team was completely up-to-date with what was going on with my child any time I communicated with them - it was impressive. I'm thankful for the intensive support they provide to the whole family. I recommend HTP without reservation."

"We were so fortunate to have HTP as our child continued her recovery. The HTP team is experienced and compassionate. They understand how to challenge the ED, and are great coaches for parents. Having a child with ED is distressing for the entire family. We are grateful for all that the entire HTP team has done for us."

"The Healthy Teen Project (HTP) program works! We had tried Family Based Therapy (FBT) before but that did NOT work for us at all. Fortunately we found HTP and never looked back. HTP provided us what no other treatment program could in a single place: non-resident program, medical health monitoring, personal therapy, group therapy, in-house dietician and nutritional education, strict structure, discipline, parent education and a positive, supportive environment for both teens and parents. HTP didn't just help our teen, they helped us as a family too. FBT gave us all the responsibility as parents, residential programs (which we didn't try) took ownership for a period of time but then they would give all the responsibility back to us and we didn't have a clue of what to do. HTP does it differently. Half of the treatment is at HTP and half of it at home and the parents become part of the team. I appreciated that the staff of HTP educated us and told us what to do -as a family, and how to prepare for and manage all the tough challenges. As opposed to FBT, where as parents we had to be the good guys as well as the bad guys, HTP took on the tough role for most of the day, and then afterwards home became a place for kindness, understanding, love and support. We continued enforcing the structure and rules specified by the program, but we weren't the bad guys anymore and the fights stopped. As things improved both physically and mentally, things got easier and easier as we slowly transitioned to having more time at home until final graduation. I could only guess that the negative reviewers had different expectations or an extremely serious situation. HTP provides great treatment, structure and guidance and we had an important job to do as parents as well. We were no longer alone and that was already half the path to wellness. HTP has helped a lot of families (many more than the reviews we can assure you), and we have personal proof that HTP works. Everyone we met at HTP is extremely committed and they truly believe in the purpose of the program. We would not hesitate to recommend them."
