Dangermond Preserve and Point Conception Institute

The Dangermond Preserve and Point Conception Institute, located at 8101 Jalama Road in Lompoc, California, is a unique institution owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. The property was purchased in December 2017 with a generous philanthropic gift from Jack and Laura Dangermond. The Preserve works closely with various partners, including the University of California, ESRI, and local conservation organizations, to advance conservation science and cultivate a diverse community for activities.

While the Dangermond Preserve is not open to the public, The Nature Conservancy is developing public programs for managed access to the Preserve. Visitors can access the Preserve through Jalama County Road, which leads to Jalama Beach County State Park. The Conservancy transferred 36 acres of the historic Bixby Ranch to the county park in 2021, doubling its size and providing additional recreational opportunities.

The Preserve's goal is to protect the unique biological and cultural resources of the area, including its biodiverse beaches and shoreline systems. Grazing is an important part of the land's history, and the Preserve continues to operate as a working ranch using cattle for land management purposes. The Conservancy is a nonprofit organization, and donations to support its conservation efforts are tax-deductible.

Please note that access to the lighthouse on the property is restricted, as it is owned and secured by the Department of Defense, Vandenberg Space Force Base. Trespassing on federal property can result in legal consequences. The Preserve is committed to balancing visitor usage with conservation goals to preserve the area's natural beauty and biodiversity.
