Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is a K-5 public school located in the vibrant Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Named after the iconic LGBTQ rights activist Harvey Milk, our school is dedicated to empowering student learning through awareness, acceptance, and non-violence. We celebrate diversity, strive for academic excellence, and prioritize strong connections between families, schools, and the community.
At HMCRA, students are encouraged to actively participate in their educational journey. Our curriculum focuses on developing literacy skills, hands-on science and math education, and global awareness through social studies. Our school offers a variety of enrichment programs including a library, visual and performing arts, field trips, outdoor education, computers, and music.
We have an open-door policy for parents and believe in involving all stakeholders in the decision-making process. Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to themselves, their families, the community, and society at large.
Renamed in honor of Harvey Milk in 1996, our school is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment free from discrimination, harassment, and bullying. We believe in fostering a culture of acceptance and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or identity.

"We have been so happy with our experience at HMCRA this year. The school wasn't our first choice but I'm thrilled that this is where we ended up. The facilities are beautiful, teachers lovely and principal super dedicated especially in this post pandemic year. Our son has an IEP and we have been impressed with the reading specialist, OT and school psychologist. I feel like this school is an unknown gem. If you are doing the school search, do yourself a favor and check out this sweet school!!"
