"In 1983 I was thirty and had returned to college at Cal Poly. My wife inherited $100,000. We didn't know how to invest and had no one we knew to guide us. We asked around for referrals and Blakeslee & Blakeslee's name came up several times and we went to see them. They recommended private limited partnerships. It was the "big thing" then. They divided the $100k into four different partnerships equally. I remember clearly two things. They did not invest in stocks because they were not licensed to do so, and we would have to go else where if that is what we wanted to do. We didn't know what we wanted to do, that's why we were there! The second thing was the explanation of risk. One of the partnerships could go broke they said, but it would be EXTREMELY RARE if three went broke. Within about three years, three of the partnerships were worthless. Knowing what I know now, I would have invested in conservative Blue Chip stocks with dividend CAGRs of 5-10%. I calculate that, using S&P 500 records that our $100k would be worth about $900k, adjusted for inflation. I'd stay away from these people! You can invest successfully on your own, you really can. I do, and I strongly recommend the book, "Dividends Still Don't Lie" by Kelley Wright and the newsletter for a conservative and easy way to invest and manage your investments."
