Pongamia trees are also being grown in Hawai'i, Australia, and other regions to revitalize land and provide sustainable agricultural solutions. Each pongamia tree can remove one tonne of carbon in its first 20 years, and each acre of pongamia orchard can remove an average of 5 tonnes of carbon per year. Additionally, pongamia trees are nitrogen-fixing, which helps replenish soil health.
Terviva's efforts in India have impacted over 40,000 lives through their wild harvesting and bean collection initiatives. They pay above the minimum government support price for wild harvested pongamia beans, improving the livelihoods of bean collectors by almost 50%.
