"San Francisco created the Alamo Square Historic District in July 1984. The district is roughly bounded by Golden Gate Avenue, Divisadero, Webster Street and Fell Street. The Alamo Square Historic District is noted for residences built between 1870 and 1929. Many were designed by prominent architects and are distinguished by intense ornamentation. Most of the original owner-residents were successful businessmen. The most photographed buildings in the district are the Westerfeld House on Fulton Street and the Painted Ladies on Steiner Street."
