About the Business

McNear Building

The McNear Building is a historic institution located at 7 4th Street in Petaluma, California. Originally constructed in 1886 by the McNear family, this 20,000 square-foot building is a testament to the rich history of the area. The McNear family was involved in various industries such as real estate, milling, and shipping, making them one of the most prominent families in Sonoma County.

In addition to the 1886 McNear Building, the family also constructed the 1911 McNear Building, adding another 30,000 square feet of space. These buildings were considered the finest in Sonoma County and were a source of pride for the community. However, by the 1950s, the buildings fell into disrepair until the mid-1970s when they were restored to their former glory by the Harriman Family.

Today, the McNear Buildings are owned and operated by the Harriman Family and serve as a prime location for retail shops and professional offices. The buildings are a perfect example of restored historic California Victorian commercial buildings and are a true gift to the Petaluma community. With long-term tenants such as the McNear's Saloon and Dining House and the Mystic Theatre, the McNear Building continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Petaluma.

The Petaluma area has a rich history dating back thousands of years to when the Coast Miwoks inhabited the region. The town's position on the Petaluma River and its fertile farmland made it a critical hub for pioneers during the Gold Rush. Today, Petaluma is known for its grain milling and chicken processing industries, earning it the nickname of the "Egg Capital of the World."

Located in central downtown Petaluma, the McNear Building is close to public transit, parking, and popular shops and attractions. Whether you're looking to start a business or simply explore the history of the area, the McNear Building is a must-visit destination in Petaluma.
