The Long Now Foundation

The Long Now Foundation, located in San Francisco, California, is a nonprofit institution established in 01996 with a mission to foster long-term thinking. They encourage imagination at the timescale of civilization, focusing on the next and last 10,000 years, which they refer to as the "long now." The foundation aims to help individuals become good ancestors and preserve possibilities for the future.

One of the notable projects of The Long Now Foundation is the construction of an immense mechanical monument, known as The Clock, which is being installed in a mountain in west Texas. This clock is designed to keep accurate time for the next 10,000 years, serving as a symbol of our connection to the distant future. The Clock features specially-designed dials and a chime generator, created in collaboration with Brian Eno, that can produce over 3.5 million unique bell chime sequences for each day it is visited.

In addition to The Clock, The Long Now Foundation is involved in various other projects, such as the Rosetta Project, which has compiled an archive of human languages and created The Rosetta Disk to preserve this information for thousands of years. The foundation also hosts events, seminars, and interviews with long-term thinkers, as well as operates a public space in San Francisco called The Interval, which features craft cocktails, artisan coffee, a library, and prototypes from The Clock project.
