About the Business

Free Speech Movement Cafe

The Free Speech Movement (FSM) Café, located at University Drive in Berkeley, California, is a vibrant and welcoming cafe offering a variety of delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches made with local, sustainable, or organic ingredients. The cafe, situated at the south entrance to Moffitt Library on Floor 3, is a popular spot for students and community members to gather, study, or simply relax with friends.

Named in honor of Mario Savio, a key figure in the fight for free speech at Berkeley, the FSM Café also commemorates the events of the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley. Indoor and terrace seating is available, providing a comfortable setting for patrons to enjoy their meals.

Generously funded by alumnus Stephen M. Silberstein, the FSM Café not only serves delicious food but also supports the digitization of the FSM archives and endows library collections in the humanities. The menu reflects the values of the Free Speech Movement, promoting sustainability and supporting local farmers who practice eco-friendly farming methods.

In addition to serving food, the FSM Café hosts events and debates through its Educational Program Series, providing a platform for critical discussions on contemporary social and political issues. The cafe also features bulletin boards where students can stay updated on current activities at Berkeley and beyond, highlighting individuals and groups working towards positive social change.

Whether you're looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, engage in stimulating conversations, or simply unwind, the FSM Café is the perfect destination for food and thought in the heart of Berkeley.

"Cashier told me I wouldn't be able to use my gift card (which had about $10 on it) for a $15 order. He showed me on his screen that the order would still cost $5, and then he charged me the full $15. But whatever action he took to show the order cost coming out to $5 on the screen emptied the $10 balance on my gift card. Not only was the cashier incorrect (I could have credited the $10 gift card balance towards the order, as my friends have done at other Stradavarius restaurants), but the cashier was brusque and rude throughout the entire interaction, and did not respond to my repeated concerns about the gift card, even though there was no line."

"Their price is insane, ripping off students. While their female staffs are friendly, some of their male owners/staff are rude and incompetent. Food is food, but if you think this place is decent I’d Venmo you $15 to check out any other cafe on this planet. It is a shame that this cafe is at the heart of the university and carrying such a historical and prestigious name."

"I enjoyed my chai latte. The art on the walls is cool. Service is whatever. Prices are reasonable. Students enjoy gathering in the cafe. My drink took only a few minutes which is nice"
