"I visited the store yesterday. I’m a graduate student taking an instrument repair class, so I’ve been looking for “beater” instruments to take apart and re-assemble. “Oh, I have a really nice flute,” the man behind the counter exclaimed, as he proffered a Gemeinhardt 2sp. I opened the case and inspected the instrument. The metal was covered in nicks and dings. The pads were largely warped and shredded. I picked it up and played a few notes- I couldn’t get the lower notes to pop out, which is an immediate indication that the flute is out of adjustment and the keys aren’t sealing properly. I was able to play the higher notes- but I really had to coax them out (also an indication that the flute needs work). I am a professional flutist who knows all the tricks and I could barely get the instrument to cooperate. Imagine a new 5th grader trying to wrestle with this instrument! A new student would really struggle to make progress on this flute. The price- $170 for a flute that would needs several hundred dollars in repairs. You could buy a brand new 2sp with a warranty for less than the price to get this one in working order. I tried to share my concerns with the staff, but they just kept saying, “No, this is a really nice flute.” I’m left to believe that 1. They are complete liars trying to prey on unsuspecting public, or 2. they lack basic knowledge in music and music instruments to make qualified judgements about the value of the flute- in which case, they should defer to the expertise of professionals (i.e. me) The 2sp is designed for beginners, and it would kill me to see this flute in the hands of a beginning band student. Or anyone, really. I would not even pay $50 for this flute."
