CommuniCare at The MAC at Morgan's Wonderland

"My son is a patient at Communicare at the MAC and has seen Dr. Inglish, Dr. Switzer and Dr. Sanders. The doctors here are excellent and have “a way” with special needs patients. My son who has ASD is very responsive and cooperative in his visits in part because of their excellent bedside manner. Unfortunately we’ve had 2 separate incidents where nurses here used restraint as the first option, which is not okay. I’ve had follow up conversations with the subject nurses and then the attending doctors to share this concern. My son is very capable and cooperative, and as a parent who is very involved in his therapies, I know strategies to help encourage cooperation in situations where he’s initially nervous. In these 2 instances the nurses did not ask or involve me in the strategy/process beforehand (one was a nasal swabbing). Explaining what was going to be done beforehand and/or asking me for input would have prevented incidents that were emotionally taxing on my child. I’m hoping the nursing and assistant staff gets more training in respecting bodily autonomy and being aware of potentially ableist practices. Again, the doctors here are wonderful but I am hoping for improvement in other staffs interactions with special needs children to more closely align with the tenants/mission of Morgan’s Inclusion."
