"This is a cafeteria in the downstairs of the state office building. No sign outside, just says "OPEN". However, it is open to the public and the food is really good. I have eaten here for years. There are daily specials, usually an entree, 2 vegetables/sides, and a bread. They also have burgers, sandwiches, salads, etc. You can eat in 78701 downtown Austin for less than $10... and this is one of the few places you can do that."
"Knew nothing about the Messhall when I wondered in while in Austin for a conference and fell in love with the place. Went 3 mornings in a row. All local patrons, great staff. A hole-on-the-wall place but the food is GREAT. Breakfast that was $18 at the hotel was $4 here and far superior!"
"I eat here several times a week because of the location, but it is worth the trip from anywhere in Austin. It is the BEST hot plate lunch in town and the black-eyed peas must be sent directly from Heaven!!! Great staff, too!"
