About the Business

Fern Cliff Nature Preserve

Fern Cliff Nature Preserve is a stunning natural site located in Greencastle, Indiana, United States. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1980, this park is a popular tourist attraction known for its steep sandstone cliffs, lush wooded ravines, and abundant ferns and bryophytes. The preserve is a botanist's paradise, with rare plant species and unique vegetation.

Managed by The Nature Conservancy in partnership with other organizations, Fern Cliff aims to protect native plant species from invasive threats like autumn olive. Visitors can enjoy hiking, photography, and bird watching on the preserve's moderate to rugged terrain. Rock climbing and rappelling are not allowed, but the diverse flora and fauna make for a rewarding outdoor experience.

The preserve can be accessed from Greencastle or U.S. 40, with detailed directions provided for both routes. Rare bryophytes, ferns, and other plant species can be found throughout the preserve, making it a fascinating destination for nature enthusiasts. The Nature Conservancy is also involved in conservation efforts in the Wabash River watershed and removal of dams in Big Indian Creek.

Before visiting Fern Cliff, visitors are encouraged to review preserve guidelines and respect the natural environment. The gated entrance keeps vehicles out, so visitors should park nearby and walk to the preserve. With its rich biodiversity and conservation efforts, Fern Cliff Nature Preserve offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking to connect with nature.

"Peaceful area returning to nature with hints of previous inhabitation. Beautiful flora and scenic views. Nice little topographic section in the back."

"Fern Cliffs is such a beautiful place to visit. I have been many times. I usually pack a lunch & a hammock & have a little picnic day with a friend. There is a very small parking lot that maybe fits 4 cars? Its not a very known spot so there's usually always room to park. The cliffs are gorgeous any time of year. I highly recommend giving Fern Cliffs a visit!"

"Beautiful tree lined trail that helps keep it cooler during the summer. The cliffs are magnificent and are host the park’s namesake. There are old structures that offer a glimpse of the past and how some architecture can stand the test of time. Highly recommend…definitely be careful when walking along the cliffs!!!"

"This place is absolutely beautiful. It may be overgrown, but you can plainly see the quarry through the tree cover. The fern-covered walls are a sight to see, and I was lucky enough to catch icicles still clinging to the cliff wall. Gorgeous scenery, quiet, peaceful. Doggo-approved."

"As someone who loves ferns, moss, and lichens- this place was heavenly! Most of the trail/s are very easy, though to get the best view of the moss and fern covered cliff faces you have to follow a steep and narrow path. Definitely worth it if you're able, but there is still plenty to enjoy if not!"
