About the Business
Historic Harrisville Inc, located at 69 Main Street in Harrisville, New Hampshire, is a tourist attraction with a rich history in the textile industry. The Cheshire Mills operated in the town from 1852 to 1970, providing livelihoods for many residents. When the mill went bankrupt in 1970, the community came together with preservationists to form Historic Harrisville Inc. Their mission was not only to maintain and renovate the old mill buildings, but also to create opportunities for people to live and work in Harrisville.
In 1977, Harrisville was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of Interior. Today, the buildings owned by Historic Harrisville house various small businesses, manufacturers, residents, artists, writers, a daycare center, textile retail store, post office, designers, and offer affordable housing. The Harrisville General Store, owned and operated by Historic Harrisville, serves as a central gathering place for the community, providing food and a sense of community spirit.
Join visiting MacDowell fellow and author Julie Buntin, as well as author and educator Susie Spikol, at events in the new Tiny Store Series at the Harrisville General Store. The newly opened Book Nook at the store offers a diverse selection of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books curated by editor and Harrisville resident, John Knight.
Historic Harrisville Inc continues to enhance the quality of life, community spirit, beauty, and economic vitality of Harrisville. Visit them to experience the rich history and vibrant community of this historic town. Contact them at 603-827-3722 or visit their website for more information.
