About the Business

Welcome to Reed Homestead, located at 72 Main Street in Townsend, Massachusetts. As a museum, we are dedicated to preserving the rich history of our community, which dates back over three centuries. Founded in 1732 as a farming settlement, Townsend has evolved into a vibrant town with a fascinating past.
The Reed Homestead, built in the late 1700s, has been home to five generations of the Reed family. Acquired by the Townsend Historical Society in 1972, this historic Federal-era dwelling now serves as our headquarters and museum. The house is known for its well-preserved architecture and the impressive collection of artifacts that tell the story of Townsend's journey through time.
We invite you to visit us and explore the Reed Homestead and our other buildings in Townsend Harbor. Our museum showcases thousands of artifacts that highlight different aspects of our community's history. From farming and industry to daily life in the 19th century, there is so much to discover at Reed Homestead.
Join us for special events throughout the year, such as the Scarecrow Festival in October, the Annual Membership Meeting in November, and the Holiday Open House in December. We rely on the support of our members to continue preserving Townsend's history for future generations. Make an appointment to visit us and experience the legacy of the Reed family and the town of Townsend.

"Great place to learn about local history! They have unique items on display including a Rufus Porter painted mural that covers one large wall. The grounds are frequently used to host camps for local period reenactors. While nearby railroad tracks have been removed for the Squanacook River Rail Trail, the old tracks behind the homestead are being maintained to preserve railroad history in the area. Plan to visit the nearby Cooperage which is open daily. There is also a Grist Mill and the Townsend Harbor Church that once served the area and both now belong to the Townsend Historic Society. The Reed home also serves as the main offices of the Townsend Historic Society"
