About the Business

Marietta House Museum, located at 5626 Bell Station Road in Glenn Dale, Maryland, is a historic late Federal-style brick house and former tobacco plantation. Built in 1813, it was the home of Gabriel Duvall, a prominent figure in Maryland history who served as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The museum showcases the complex history of Marietta, including the stories of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the property.
Visitors can explore the house, cemetery, original root cellar, and Duvall's law office, as well as the 25-acre grounds that once housed outbuildings and slave dwellings. Guided tours offer insight into the relationships between the enslaved community and their enslavers, shaped by the nation's founding documents and local slave codes.
In addition to tours, Marietta House Museum offers a variety of programs and events, including family folklore stories, lunchtime lectures, and workshops for writers. Educators and group leaders can also arrange field trips for students in grades 4 through 12, with interactive tours and activities focused on the history of slavery and freedom in America.
To make reservations or inquire about rentals for events, visitors can contact the museum at (301) 464-5291 or email MariettaHouse@pgparks.com. Reviews
"A hidden gem! Lots of land and a great location for a Wine & Jazz festival."
"Week of the book fair...Spectacular Event Great wares from other vendors, art, jewelry, lotions, potions, produce, breads, deserts juices, fish, rib dinners. Have not toured the actual museum, but the grounds are pretty for a walk and learning about the history of the place."
"If you enjoy history, it’s worth a visit. It’s a 1812 Federal-style mansion of a Supreme Court Justice. There’s a free parking lot and tours offers on some days. Budget spending 45-60 minutes here. Despite a dark history, they do a better-than-most job at honoring the people who used to be on the lane before Europeans and the hundreds of people once enslaved on the land."
"We had a great experience... It is currently under renovation and the upgrades thus far are wonderful. We had an all-white end of the summer party.... everyone had a great time!!!"
"A very historical Maryland home of Gabriel Duvall, one of the early Supreme Court justices, but now often forgotten. Stacy was a fantastic tour guide for the home; an expert on the lives of the Duvall family members in Maryland, and their relationship with other notable founding families in the state as well as with Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. You can explore the grounds at your leisure. However to tour the home call ahead! They are short staffed and someone may not always be available if you show up without calling ahead."
