About the Business

Gary Land Company Building

Located at 300 Broadway in Gary, Indiana, the Gary Land Company Building holds a significant place in the city's history as the first locally designated landmark. Built in 1906, this unassuming frame building served as the first permanent structure in the city of Gary and played a crucial role in the development of the area. Originally operated by the Gary Land Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel, the building oversaw real estate, city planning, and engineering services that shaped the city's growth.

Over the years, the Gary Land Company Building has served various functions, including as the first Town Hall where residents voted to incorporate the city, as a post office, and even as a classroom for the city's first high school students. Recently designated as a local landmark by Gary's Common Council, the building is now protected for future generations to appreciate.

Thanks to efforts by the Decay Devils and a grant from the Legacy Foundation, the building has been restored with a fresh coat of paint, new lighting, and landscaping. The city sees potential for the structure to become a welcome center or small museum showcasing the area's rich history. With ongoing support from organizations like Indiana Landmarks and the Gary Historical Society, the Gary Land Company Building continues to stand as a symbol of Gary's past and future.

"Built in 1906 this is the first, and oldest, building in all of Gary. The very first lots were sold out of this building which also served as the town hall and post office. SUCH AMAZING HISTORY, right here in this building. So lucky it has been preserved all this time!"
