About the Business

The Eagles and Prey Monument, located at The Mall in New York City's Central Park, is a historic and unique work of art that dates back to 1850. This sculpture, depicting two eagles attacking a goat, was gifted to the Park by American millionaire Gordon W. Burnham in 1863. Created by French artist Christophe Fratin, known for his detailed sculptures of animals, Eagles and Prey is the oldest known piece of art on City parkland.
The realism and savagery portrayed in the sculpture fascinated early Park visitors, who were drawn to the intricate anatomical details and the illusion of realism created by the surrounding plantings. Along with two other animal-themed sculptures in the Park, Eagles and Prey adds to the natural and rural atmosphere of Central Park, despite not being part of the original design.
Support the Central Park Conservancy in keeping the Park beautiful and vibrant by making a gift today. Visit Eagles and Prey Monument to experience a piece of history and admire the artistry of Christophe Fratin. Let the beauty of nature in Central Park cure your spring fever.
Reviews
"The most unknown statue in the park... and also the oldest in New York. It represents two eagles attacking a goat. It was made by a French sculptor!"
"I came across this statue by accident, and it is really unusual. The statue depicts a helpless goat caught in the talons of two birds of prey. It has the distinction of being the oldest known sculpture in any New York City Park, being installed in Central Park in 1863. The statue was created by Christopher Fratin."
"One of the interesting monuments to see in Central Park is the 'Eagles and Prey' sculpture near the north end of The Mall. This is a detailed sculpture of two large eagles attacking a goat. Eagles and Prey is the works of French sculptor Christophe Fratin (1850) and was the first erected sculpture in a New York City park in 1863. It is a nice sculpture to view if you plan to spend time along The Mall during visits to Central Park."
