About the Business

Grandma's Toy Box LLC

Grandma's Toy Box LLC is a charming specialty toy store located at 223 East Wall Street in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Owners Jim & Kathy Holperin, who are Eagle River natives, have a long history of running businesses in the area. Kathy opened Grandma’s Toy Box in 2008, which has since experienced continued growth and led to the opening of a second store, Eagle Craft & Hobby, in 2014.

Grandma’s Toy Box is situated in the old Gaffney/Stallman/Hyslop furniture store, right across from Vilas Cinema, while Eagle Craft & Hobby is located next door in the historic Eagle Theater building. The store also houses “Bauer’s Rock Shop”, continuing the family tradition of retail in Eagle River.

Managed by son Chris Holperin, Eagle Craft & Hobby offers a wide range of remote control toys and hobby supplies. The family takes pride in being a part of Eagle River’s commercial district and invites visitors to stop by one or both of their stores when in the downtown area.

"Great store! Unique toys, games, puzzles and more. I always find the best gifts for my grandchildren there."

"This place does not deserve a star. We went there this last Monday and the so called grandma behind the counter was so freaking rude to my family. My toddler was walking around with a unicorn while we were looking at toys. She handed the unicorn to the woman with a huge smile and I could not believe how rude she was to a 1.5 year old. She is by far no grandma I would ever want"

"Sooo many things to look at if you bring a child in this store. And you will spend time explaining what some of the toys are to your kids/grandkids because there are no video games to look at! Just quality physical toys"

"This is my favorite store in eagle river. On one side you have a rock and gem shop that is top notch.. On the other side you have a fantastic toy store. I hope this place never closes. I buy most of my gifts here."

"Our family went in this afternoon prepared to spend quite a bit of money (like we’ve done every year when we’ve come to visit, we have 4 kids). However, this afternoon the older lady behind the counter, I’m assuming Kathy, seemed agitated and impatient. Kids who come into your store are going to touch things — You own a toy store. I was very thoughtful to ensure that all of our children were respectful. My 14 yo was goofing around with an orangutan puppet in the back (with his dad standing right there, who was playing along with him) when she said (very sharply), “I still have to sell that.” What she didn’t realize is that we fully intended to buy it. I had a $33 card game in my hand, and our other children had picked out things to purchase as well. I had our family put our things back. We all left disappointed. We ended up buying toys, and my card game, from a big box store instead. I’m all for supporting local business, especially toy stores in the Northwoods. Unfortunately, after how we were treated today, we will not be back."
