About the Business

The John Arthur Woollam Preserve is a 185-acre park located at Michigan 134 in Cedarville, Michigan, United States. The highlight of this preserve is the 4,300 feet of sand and cobble beach along Lake Huron, with stunning rocky shoreline, huge boulders, coastal wetlands, and a variety of plant and animal species.
Visitors can enjoy significant shoreline for migratory and breeding birds, as well as habitat for plant species like Houghton's goldenrod. The warm waters near the shore attract masses of flying insects, providing a feast for migrating birds. Conservation of the shoreline is a main goal of the preserve.
Animal sightings may include the loon, pileated woodpecker, osprey, deer, and various species of neotropical migratory songbirds. The preserve is open year-round, with May being a great time to visit for birdwatching.
Activities at the preserve include geocaching, webinars, events, and volunteer opportunities. Visitors can also explore the preserve through iNaturalist to help track species. The Nature Conservancy, which owns the preserve, aims to protect wildlife and natural systems across the state of Michigan.
Visitors are encouraged to follow rules for the safety of the habitats and guests. The preserve offers well-maintained trails, but some areas may have soft ground and uneven terrain. By supporting the Nature Conservancy, visitors can contribute to conservation efforts in Michigan and beyond.
Reviews
"Our own little Narnia Trail. This is a 4 mile out and back trail that takes you through many different landscapes, from the beach of Lake Huron to a dense and beautiful fairy forest. It is a simple trail, however there are spots that the tree roots are dominant. I saw a bunch of random trash like a sock, towel, shorts, scattered throughout the trail, and my guess is it is from the people that want to find that fantastic cove and beach, and do a bit of swimming."
"Highly recommend! Absolutely beautiful scenery, easy, short walk to the shoreline. The large boulders strewn along the shoreline is a must see. Crystal clear waters, this is a unique place that will capture your heart!"
"Nice place. The trails are not marked well. We ended up on a rabbit trail for a while. Finally decided to turn around and found the real trail. Easy to walk. Some roots and rocky areas along trail. We saw a Pilated woodpecker up close."
"Really neat trail to check out the unique limestone. Use some sort of foot protection if you intend to go swimming!"
"Absolutely beautiful, a huge thank you to John Woollam for protecting such a wonderful place. Take the walk to the beach then head east for some great views of the lake but also a beautiful forest. I went about a mile, you do leave the preserve but it is all part of the Huron birding trail. Go back to the trail that goes west and follow that until it connects to the Sand Bay trail? (sorry forgot the name already but just follow the trail). The woods are not as pretty as going east but when you get to the bay it is worth the 1.5 mile hike. I would give this 10 stars if I could."
