The institution has a rich history, originally established as the Western Health Reform Institute in 1866, then becoming the Battle Creek Sanitarium in 1878, Percy Jones Army Hospital in 1942, and finally the Battle Creek Federal Center in 1954. In 2003, it was renamed in honor of three former U.S. senators who were patients there during World War II: Philip Hart of Michigan, Robert Dole of Kansas, and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. The center is managed by the U.S. General Services Administration and follows federal property management regulations.
