About the Business

Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse

The Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse is a historic institution located at 2 Grant Street in Charlevoix, Michigan. Established in 1914, the lighthouse has been guiding ships safely into Lake Charlevoix for over a century. The current tower was first lit in 1948 and is still operational today. The lighthouse is constructed on a wooden pier and has a distinctive skeletal tower shape, painted white with a black lantern. The original fifth order Fresnel lens is still in place, providing a beacon of light for maritime navigation. The institution is a significant landmark in Charlevoix County and is maintained by dedicated volunteers, such as Melissa Buckler from the U.S. Lighthouse Society's Chesapeake Chapter. Visit the Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse to learn about its rich history and importance in guiding ships on Lake Michigan.

"Beach was very nice. Clean with nice sandy beach and bottom. Lighthouse was OK and enjoyed watching the boats go out. Also enjoyed skipping the stones"

"Love visiting lighthouses and this one is easily accessible. We found we could get our 35 foot RV in and out with no hassles. There was enough room to legally park near the research center and the drive through was a circle that we were easily able to navigate even with our length."

"The lighthouse area has a nice beach area and playground for kids. Also good spots for a picnic. You can then take a walk towards to town which has very cute shops and restaurants."
