About the Business

Nara Nature Park

Nara Nature Park is a picturesque 100-acre nature park located in Houghton, Michigan, just two miles east of the Michigan Tech University campus. Donated to the city by Bob and Ruth Nara, this park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, running, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing on over 50 miles of interconnected trails. The park also features a beautiful boardwalk along the Pilgrim River, perfect for fishing, launching kayaks and canoes, or simply enjoying the serene surroundings.

After a historic thunderstorm caused damage to the wetland boardwalk system in 2018, the city worked with FEMA to rebuild and upgrade the boardwalks to current accessibility standards. The newly constructed boardwalks now feature improved stability and durability, ensuring visitors can enjoy the wetland areas safely.

In addition to the trails and boardwalks, Nara Nature Park also offers a Peepsock Trail that leads to the Portage Lake shore, a sledding hill, and a chalet with interpretive displays, restrooms, and a concession area. The chalet is open year-round to the public and provides a cozy spot to warm up by the fireplace or learn more about the plant species and wildlife that call the park home. Visitors are welcome to use the chalet for gatherings, as long as they clean up after themselves and respect the public nature of the building.

"I've only parked across the road in a gravel "lot" alongside the Soo Line Trail and done the boardwalk trails here, but they were quite serene."

"If boardwalks made of wood is something you've been missing in your life, this is the place for you! There's nothing but that here to be more specific. With a panorama view of water, clouds, and more water, it is definitely a place of true beauty."
