"We've had a horror story ourselves going here that cost us over $1000 from incompetence. Stopped going here a few years now.... Its hard to find a competent veterinarian clinic today.... All customers today are looked at as a Golden Goose, and they guilt you into buying vaccinations and other meds, which help to support their over staffing.... (If they're understaffed as they claim its from poor management) We treat our pets like we treat each other, we dont unnecessarily give them medications unless they actually need them.... (We have every right to question what their doing because we are their Customers and we're most of the times Correct) Its foolish to give our pets flea meds in the winter when they barely spend time outside because of the cold temps. Heartworm medications are another one that needs to have better guidelines.... If you live in an area that has a high mosquito population during the summer months then give it to your pets, hard to find a mosquito in the winter in northern climates..... (So a review flea, tick and heartworm meds in summer months only ✔️) This clinic will give you all kinds of reasons to give meds unnecessarily year round, but leave out that they need those greenbacks more.... There probably won't ever be a small town vet whom just supports a minimal staff with decent pricing and won't prescribe meds unnecessarily to your pets...."

"Last week sweet dog of nearly 15 years, Latte Grande, had reached the end of his journey. He has been taken care of by VCA every since we relocated here 12 years ago when I retired. All the Doctors at VCA have always listened to us and have taken care of Latte the whole time. Dr. Browning and the staff helped us make this decision and with great consul and empathy we said goodbye to our sweet prince and held him as he took his last breath and crossed the rainbow bridge. Thanks you Dr. Browning for being such a good friend to both us and Latte and helping us get through that difficult process. We wish everyone at VCA Portage all the best and thank them for their dedicated service to Latte through his various trials and tribulations throughout the years. Dave and Leslie"

"My daughter brought her cat in a few weeks ago with symptoms. After $600 between the appointment fee and tests, they said nothing is wrong. This cat’s symptoms have only gotten worse and is now drooling out blood. My daughter called them back today and the response was to bring her back in and the fee is $99. When my daughter asks why she still needed to pay when they didn’t find anything the first time, the response was cold hearted “it is your responsibility to contact us if the symptoms got worse.” No VCA, it was your responsibility to do a more comprehensive check to begin with. Saying nothing is wrong and now the cat is worse and suffering is a miss on your part. You are the supposed experts and the critical thinking should have been, “the tests didn’t show us anything so let’s continue to look”. You missed a diagnosis and sometimes that happens but when it does, you own it, not shame my daughter like she did something wrong and try to charge her for it. She trusted you. I suggest having a more compassionate receptionist as these animals mean something to people. Perhaps even consider doing a better job of simple problem solving."

"This place is amazing, I could not recommend a place to take your animals any more than here. I (unfortunately) ran into an emergency and they got me in so quickly and efficiently with such care that I was so impressed and plan on taking all of my animals here for the rest of the time that I live in Kalamazoo. Everyone was so friendly and truly seemed like they cared about my dogs well-being - which means everything to me considering my dogs are my fur children and mean the world to me. I appreciate it more than they know. So thank you!"

"We had to put down our 15 year old dog Levi and amidst one of the saddest moments of our lives, the kindness and sincerity of the staff was a bright light during our stormy day. They were extremely kind and sympathetic from the phone call to make the appointment, to during the appointment, to two weeks after when they sent us a card signed by the staff. I cannot say enough good things about this staff and this animal hospital and I will recommend them to anyone and everyone. Their presence and sincerity was exactly what we needed during this terrible time and I will forever be grateful to them for the love they showed us. A big and sincere thank you goes to all of them, and my husband and I feel very blessed to have worked with them, even under the circumstances."
