"I've been passing this by for 54 years, and my wife and I finally went to a performance. We enjoyed the moving story of the Moravians, their interactions with the American Indians, and their untenable situation in the American Revolution. We've visited Schoenbrunn and Gnadenhutten, so we knew the actual history. The play covers several years of history, so a lot has to be glossed over. The addition of some of the women characters brings a nice human element to the story. I think that Simon Girty's character (as written by the playwright) over-emphasized the "white savage" misconception of him a bit too much (he did try to save Col. Crawford's life later, after all). The religious mission of the Moravians was represented well. As a Lutheran pastor, I especially enjoyed all the Lutheran chorales that were sung by the Moravians. The inclusion of "Aus Tiefer Not" by Martin Luther was particularly effective, having the Christian Indians sing it during the night before they were mercilessly slaughtered by the Pennsylvania militia in the morning. My wife and I plan to return to see the play again in the future. I'm no conniseur of plays, but we really enjoyed the acting. I thought that the actors playing Zeisberger and Susan were very good. The facial expressions on the female "Shaman" were done well, too."
