About the Business

Legal Aid of Western Ohio

Legal Aid of Western Ohio (LAWO) is a non-profit regional law firm located in Fremont, Ohio, United States. Our mission is to provide high quality legal assistance in civil matters to help eligible low-income individuals and groups achieve self-reliance, equal justice, and economic opportunity.

In a time of economic and health uncertainty, LAWO works to protect families trying to stay safe and housed. We focus on protecting the rights of tenants to create a stronger community. For over 20 years, we have been fighting to right the wrongs that disproportionately affect communities of color and people living in poverty.

Our services include preventing homelessness, protecting renters from unhealthy living conditions, supporting veterans, promoting independence for seniors, ensuring access to healthcare and education, and advocating for a level playing field in financial transactions. We also work to lift up the voices of those often unheard and left behind.

At LAWO, we provide legal assistance in civil cases that protect individual rights and promote systemic change in the areas of civil rights and poverty law. We have offices in various locations, including Dayton, Defiance, Findlay, Lima, Sandusky, Springfield, and Toledo.

Volunteerism plays a crucial role in our work through our Pro Bono Program, where generous attorneys and law firms dedicate their time and expertise to assist low-income individuals. We are always looking for more volunteers to join our program and make a difference in our community.

If you are in need of legal assistance or would like any publications translated, please contact us at LAWO. We are here to help and advocate for those in need throughout 32 northwest and west central Ohio counties.

"I have suffered through 16 years of financial/emotional abuse (being kept in the dark about finances attached to this house, my husband's impulsive mistakes along with his criminal record, and not being able to get help with Legal Aid because they DON'T have funding, or I DON'T fit their definition of an "abused" person). I contacted Legal Aid, Veterans Legal Aid, First Call for Help and the United Way...NOTHING. I CAN'T afford legal representation!!! Why in the hell are these agencies in business if they can't, or WON'T help the abused, but protect the abuser? I was told that although they DON'T have funding, if I could prove Domestic Violence (In which they define as physical, mental, emotional, and sexual), I might stand the chance of retaining counsel. After speaking with a representative about the endless financial, emotional, mental and psychological abuse I've endured throughout the 16 years of marriage, I was basically told that THAT type of abuse DOESN'T measure up to had I been PHYSICALLY abused... So...why not just keep the abuse going because the abused CAN'T afford to fight her abuser? Great job people...! You should feel damn proud of yourselves!"
