About the Business

Bear's Mill

Bear's Mill, located at 6450 Arcanum Bears Mill Road in Greenville, Ohio, is a historic water-powered mill that has been in operation since 1849. This museum and tourist attraction is now part of the Darke County Park District, with the mission of preserving the mill's structure and natural surroundings.

Visitors to Bear's Mill can witness the traditional process of grinding grain into flours and meals using the same methods as old world millers. The mill's four-story framework, constructed of hand-hewn timber beams, stands as a rare historic landmark in Ohio.

In addition to the milling operations, Bear's Mill also features a Mill Store offering a variety of products, including flours, meals, gourmet food items, home goods, clothing, jewelry, and unique gifts. Specialty baked goods made with Bear's Mill flours are also available, along with jams and jellies produced locally.

The Mill Store also hosts a rotating selection of art from regional artists, with proceeds supporting the preservation and maintenance of Bear's Mill and its surrounding 35 acres of property. Visitors can support the mill's mission through donations and by attending events such as the Soup n Bowl and Total Solar Eclipse Party.

Guided tours of Bear's Mill are available for groups of all sizes, allowing visitors to learn about the mill's history and operation firsthand. Whether you're interested in history, art, or agriculture, a visit to Bear's Mill offers a unique and educational experience for all.

"Very nice old mill. Great scenery with short walking path next to it. Inside you can buy some great artsy things and edible goodies. People behind the counter are always friendly and helpful."

"Beautiful day for a Fall drive, and to soak in some Ohio history. Be sure to call to verify hours. The parking area is across from the mill, there is also a porta-potty on the parking side. There is a crosswalk and ramp to access the Mill, the paths are also handicap accessible, as well as stroller accessible. The traffic is a bit fast along there at times, that would be the only downside. One cannot see what comes around both sides if they are going fast. There is a picnic table on site, as well as some tables on their outdoor patio area. Around the opposite side of the Mill is the path that leads to the trail. Along the trail is a covered foot bridge, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the dam, and many types of trees, and birds. Once inside the Mill, ask to see the video of the history of the Mill, and surrounding property. Be sure to check out the different floors of the Mill. There is also a gift shop with local artisans, as well as the products the Mill"

"We decided to stop by and see what Bear's Mill was all about after a wrestling meet. The store is closed during January, but we did walk around and look at the outbuildings, damn and waterways. It was very interesting and full of history. We will definitely be going back when the weather warms up to give it a more thorough going over!"
