About the Business

Howard Marsh Metropark

Howard Marsh Metropark is a must-visit tourist attraction located at 401-621 South Howard Road, Curtice, Ohio, United States. This park is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts as it boasts a diverse range of bird species, including waterfowl and shorebirds. With six miles of water trails for canoeing and kayaking, and five miles of dike-top trails for hiking and biking, visitors can enjoy the great outdoors in a serene setting.

The wetland at Howard Marsh is crucial for maintaining the health of Lake Erie, and efforts are being made to restore a 1,000-acre wetland near the lakeshore. The park is known for its abundance of bird species, with over 230 documented on birding websites. Visitors can expect to see trumpeter swans, ducks, osprey, and a variety of songbirds, with occasional sightings of sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and pelicans.

In addition to birdwatching, visitors can enjoy fishing at the park, with two overlooks providing access for fishing and bird viewing. The park also offers kayaks for rent through a smartphone app, allowing visitors to explore the marsh via the water trails. The property was previously a working farm, and efforts have been made to restore it to a functioning wetland near the Lake Erie shore.

Howard Marsh Metropark is adjacent to other wildlife areas, such as Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, and the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Together, these public lands offer a unique habitat for a variety of bird species, especially during the spring migration season. The park also plays a crucial role in the conservation of wetlands, which are essential for filtering water runoff and providing important spawning habitat for fish.

Visitors can explore the quarter-mile Madewell Trail that extends into the marsh, or enjoy a relaxing day of fishing or birdwatching at the park. With its rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes, Howard Marsh Metropark is a hidden gem in Ohio that offers a peaceful retreat for outdoor enthusiasts.

"Beautiful new metro park with several long trails to choose from that wind along the marshes. The trails are packed gravel with a couple wooden bridges to walk across. There are a couple small piers to fish off of and also several bench areas along the trails to take in the view or rest. The parking lot has adequate parking and is paved. Connected to the parking lot is a boat trailer parking lot also. There is a boat launch concrete slip. There is a locker near the restrooms where you can rent kayaks through the Rent Fun app. Pricing was $15/hour or $3.75/15 mins. There is a bathroom house that also has water fountains on the outside. There are also signs along the trail with details about the marsh or the bird life in the area. Overall, would highly recommend this metropark for walk or a place to take your pets out. Dogs are allowed, just have to be leashed. There is a pet waste bag area by the parking lot."

"Was working in the area and was happy to find this little Marsh park. Enjoyed a couple hours kayaking on their wonderful trails. It was busy (it was a Sunday), but once I got on the water it didn't feel crowded. Saw several cool birds and just enjoyed a relaxing paddle. I would definitely return another day for a walk or another paddle."

"Breathtaking views. Aside from the famed Magee Marsh 15 minutes further up the bay, the diversity of plant and wildlife is likely best in the area. So many birds! Sunset affords you views of hundreds of rabbits coming out for their last meal, plovers and stilts tittering their last words, and these vistas that are forever perfect in my mind."

"Lovely experience. The park is much bigger than it looks. The loop is not for the faint of heart. Lots of wild birds from swans, red winged black birds and heron."

"This place was so cute! I can’t believe i had never been here before. Very spacious with minimal shade. There was lots of wildlife everywhere it was awesome! Definitely will come back here again. Also has kayaks available to rent for $15 an hour. They’re really nice kayaks in my opinion and the park is obviously well taken care of. Really great place."
