About the Business

Providence Metropark

Providence Metropark, located at 13200 South River Road in Grand Rapids, Ohio, is a historic park and tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into the past of canal travel in Ohio. The park features an original section of the Miami and Erie Canal, complete with Lock #44, where canal boats once carried goods and people between Toledo and Cincinnati.

Visitors can explore a replica of an authentic canal boat, The Volunteer, and the historic Isaac Ludwig Mill, which preserve features of mid-1800s Ohio. The Providence Dam, originally constructed to keep the canal filled with water, is also a notable attraction at the park. Kimble’s Landing provides river access for launching kayaks on the Maumee River Water Trail.

In addition to its historical features, Providence Metropark offers facilities for fishing, indoor and picnic facilities, a playground, and historic WPA buildings and bridges. The Towpath Trail, part of the Buckeye Trail, follows the remains of the Miami and Erie Canal along the old towpath where mules once towed flat-bottom boats.

Fall is a particularly beautiful time to visit Providence Metropark, as the changing leaves create a stunning backdrop for exploring the park. With a variety of facilities and rental options available, as well as a range of trails to explore, Providence Metropark offers a unique and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

"Phenomenal!! What a beautiful breathtaking park! The water is just mesmerizing. This was my first visit and I can't wait to go back. A lot of historical artifacts and just....simply beautiful! There are picnic tables, plenty of parking in the parking lot, free of charge, and a awesome sight to see. I love water so I was like a kid in the candy store. The shelter has an upstairs equiped with tables. If you haven't been to this park, you so need to go! It's therapeutic and...I just can't wait to go back! Lol"

"Beautiful, historical spot for a pit stop, or for longer explorations. You could easily spend a day here with the family. The buildings and the boat ride do not allow pets, but otherwise dogs would enjoy it."

"This metro park is very unique with the mill, canal ride, and of course the trails along the river. There’s plenty of history to learn here as the mill has several floors inside, packed with information. There are information signs all over the walkways as well. This metro park makes for a better stop than the nearby Mary Jane state park."
