Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park is a stunning park and tourist attraction located at 77200 Overseas Highway in Islamorada, Florida, United States. The park features a beautiful tropical hardwood hammock that was once common in the Upper Keys of Florida.

In 1919, William J. Matheson, a wealthy Miami chemist, purchased the island and built a caretaker's home with unique amenities such as a windmill for electricity and a cistern for rainwater. Today, visitors can explore his historic hideaway, which now serves as the visitor center for the park.

While ranger-guided tours are currently unavailable, visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour using a brochure provided at the visitor center. Lignumvitae Key is only accessible by boat or kayak, with rentals available through local vendors.

"I had a great time visiting this park via kayak. I had a day off from work so I thought I would explore a part of the Keys I’d never been. The other reviews aren’t great, but you can have a really nice time if you plan ahead a bit. First, call the number on the Park’s web site to get the latest information. Leave a message if they don’t pick up. They will call you back. When you talk to a ranger, see if they will give you the number for the on-island ranger. That way, you can call directly to the island before you head out to set up your tour and also as an extra safety. I did this and had a one-on-one guided tour of the house and trail. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent, long sleeved clothes, and a mosquito net/hood. The kayaking was not too hard, but is two miles each way and you should be in decent shape. There’s a dock on the north side of the island you can use."

"Take the sunset cruise out of Robbie's Place, it's affordable and if you get the right crowd and crew it is enjoyable. Price paid get you some beers or wine there is a head on board. Crew we had were fun and very informative of what you are seeing around you. Met some people from around the U.S.A. and engaged in fun conversation. Thanks had a great time!"

"Amazing experience, wonderful rangers, a unique key experience. We spent just as much time standing on the dock viewing fish and wildlife as we did wandering the key. Make sure you bring strong bug spray. Definitely visit the house for an accurate view of how FL used to be. Will absolutely visit again."
