About the Business

Van Fleet Trail - Bay Lake Trailhead is a beautiful park located at 7500 Bay Lake Road in Groveland, Florida, United States. This institution is officially designated as part of Florida's statewide system of greenways and trails, offering visitors a chance to explore one of Florida's most rural, paved rail-trails.

Designated as a National Recreation Trail®, the Van Fleet State Trail runs through the Green Swamp, which serves as the headwaters for popular paddling destinations such as the Withlacoochee, Hillsborough, and Peace rivers. The landscapes along the trail include river swamp, bottomland forest, pine flatwoods, former citrus lands, and cattle ranches.

With only one curve in its 29.2-mile length, visitors can choose to take a leisurely stroll to view the wildlife or enjoy a brisk pace. An equestrian trail runs parallel to the paved path, offering additional options for exploration. Excellent wildlife viewing opportunities can be found, especially between Green Pond Road and Bay Lake Road.

Hunting is allowed in the Green Swamp and Richloam wildlife management areas, located on the western side of the northern half of the trail. The trail remains open during hunting seasons, providing a unique experience for visitors. The trail itself is 29.2 miles long and features a paved surface that is eight feet wide, making it accessible for all visitors to enjoy.

"We had a great time experiencing this trail from Bay Lake to Mabel Trailhead and saw so many cool things! Tortoises literally line the trail and snakes sightings were over a dozen this day! Trail side attractions and great views. Clean restrooms and plenty of parking."

"This trip to the area involved a 15 mile bike ride down the trail. It was a hot sunny day but the tree covered Trail was cool and somewhat comfortable. I found it interesting I saw 12 Turtles an otter, two snakes, a hawk and 10,000 squirrels. From what I read the trail is 28 miles with only one small Bend. Trail is also extremely flat. If you're looking for Hills or a interval high intensity workout this wasn't it. This was a good workout with a steady pace, no cars or cross traffic to worry about and very few other people."

"Easy access to the 29.2 mile trail. About 9 miles to the next trail head north at Hwy 50 (Mabel Trailhead). This trail head has 1 restroom, picnic tables under a covered pavilion, and parking. All flat and easily accessible. Trail is nicely paved, very straight, and almost no vehicle crossings. Trees and swamp on both sides of the trail, and has covered benches with Bike Rx boxes every several miles. Trail was clean of debris even though area had heavy rains the night prior. Only passed a few cyclists between Mabel and Bay Lake trailheads (18mi), but did pass 12 turtles, 2000 squirrels, 3 cardinals, 2 snakes and an otter eating a fish (luckily no alligators!) Cell signal is intermittent."

"A beautiful trail with a ton of wildlife. Must have seen a dozen Gators, forty turtles/tortoises, a heron, three bald eagles, cows, alpaca, and anoles. Not a lot of people though! Highly recommend this trail for biking or walking."
