About the Business

Mangrove Preserve

The Mangrove Preserve in Homestead, Florida is a captivating park and tourist attraction that showcases the beauty and importance of mangrove forests. These watery mazes provide habitat for a variety of marine life, including tarpon and manatees. The preserve is home to one of the longest continuous stretches of mangroves on Florida's East coast.

Mangroves are trees that thrive in salty environments, with some species able to block salt from their roots while others secrete excess salt through their leaves. The intricate root systems of mangroves help to keep the park's waters clean and clear by slowing water flow and allowing sediment to settle. These roots also provide shelter for marine organisms and breeding areas for birds such as brown pelicans.

The preserve is home to three types of mangroves: red, black, and white. Red mangroves can be found along muddy coastlines, with their stilt-like prop roots growing in mass thickets. Black mangroves prefer salty, silty soils and are characterized by pneumatophores, or snorkel-roots, that extend above the saturated soil to obtain oxygen. White mangroves, found further inland, have salt excreting glands near their leaf base to rid themselves of excess salt.

Overall, the Mangrove Preserve is a vital ecosystem that supports a diverse range of marine life and plays a crucial role in maintaining Florida's recreational and commercial fisheries. Visitors to the preserve can explore the mysterious beauty of mangrove forests and learn about their important ecological functions.

"Nice place to enjoy your bicycle and see some manatees, snakes and alligators. There is always people fishing in the canals close to the sea. You can make a stop, seat and relax for a few minutes and keep your path."

"No. This is not a road in India. It is a "preserve" on the coast of Florida. Full of plastic junk and fishing lines slowly rotting into micro plastic.. serving as food for the animals and especially fish here here. Fisherman enjoy fishing here. What they catch is a local fish fed on local plastic... No. This is not India. It's plastic reality on your doorstep."

"Amazing place to take a hike, relax, fish, bike or do whatever else you desire. The scenery was outstanding, with mangroves on both sides along with tons of large fish in the water and a few manatees here and there. I recommend you take the C-102 trail through here, you won't regret it."
