About the Business

Wakodahatchee Wetlands

Wakodahatchee Wetlands is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located at 13270 Jog Road in Delray Beach, Florida. This 50-acre wetland area was created from previous wastewater utility property and is free and open to the public. Visitors can explore the three-quarter mile boardwalk that crosses over open water pond areas and islands with shrubs and snags, providing a perfect habitat for nesting and roosting birds.

The wetlands are part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, offering opportunities to observe over 178 bird species along with turtles, alligators, rabbits, fish, frogs, and raccoons. The Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility pumps treated wastewater into the wetlands, acting as a percolation pond to return fresh water back into the water table.

During busy times of year, such as February, March, and April, there may be wait times for parking. Visitors are encouraged to be patient and enjoy the scenery while waiting for a spot to open up. Purple Martins migrate from South America to nest in special houses at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, with the help of dedicated volunteers and Purple Martin experts.

The Miami Bat Lab has installed an acoustic recorder at the wetlands to survey the distribution patterns of the Florida Bonneted Bat, a rare species found in southern Florida. The findings will help inform conservation efforts for the endangered bat species. For more information about the Florida Bonneted Bat or to report a sighting, visitors can click on the provided link.

"Amazing boardwalk trail with close-up views of Florida's beautiful native wildlife. Free to enter but be prepared bc the line for cars to enter can be up to 45 minutes wait. But it's worth it for sure!"

"Amazing place to view wildlife. There were a lot of alligators there and many birds. It was very busy on a Sunday during the season, but all of the people were polite. Parking is super simple, with a large lot available. Kids and adults seemed to really be enjoying it."
