The park was officially opened on August 25, 2018, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Lakeland Mayor Bill Mutz. The park was donated by Lake Gibson Village in honor of Douglas M. Cook, the founder of the village. Cook's family, including his mother, widow, son, and siblings, were present at the ceremony, along with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis.
The park is now home to the Lakeland Police Athletic League's football, baseball, and cheerleading teams, with the mission of keeping kids off the streets and guiding them towards becoming productive citizens. The park features sports fields and a concession stand, attracting dozens of children and spectators.
Mayor Mutz presented Lake Gibson Village CEO Renee Tucker with a key to the city in appreciation of the village's generosity. The park has become a much-needed facility for the surrounding neighborhood, providing a space for youth sports programs to thrive.

"My granddaughter and I went here to blow off some steam or in her case sugar she enjoyed it immensely as for me it was a walk from the parking lot down to the play area that's good for me to help with my diabetes but it's getting hot again here in Florida there is plenty going for the children to do here whether playing basketball or climbing or twirling on the equipment and there is even shade for us older people to sit and enjoy watching them run amok."
"Great park! Clean and well maintained! Playground area is really nice as well. Only thing I wish it had were some sun shades over the playground as it gets really hot playing on metal at any point in Florida. Otherwise it's a great park"
"So happy to find this! My dogs loved it! Space limited where I live and they loved the run! Even supplies poo bags and place to put them for easy clean! Found our new morning out! Definitely will be back! And the other park amenities, including restrooms are awesome! Thank You! 2 areas for different size pets and the separate cages for security of making sure folks can leash or separate them is Pure Genius! I love it, & will recommend it for everyone!!"
