"My journey started off with emigrating from South Africa to the USA. That progressed into searching for a home and naturally the very difficult task - for a very new permanent resident to obtain a mortgage loan! Almost everyone that heard about my journey told me I will never be able to buy a home within 8 months of arriving in the USA. Especially with a barely established credit score and without 2 years worth of USA pay slips and employment history. Well.... how was that for the Dean Team proving them all wrong! You did the extra effort that was needed for me as a foreigner, yet new resident. You tied up my South African history up with my USA employment, Investigated my tax history in both countries, included my South African properties in your calculation, converted all of my South African assets and liabilities back into US Dollars via exchange rates and worked that into the application. You explained the different bond options available, explained and calculated different down payment options, interest rates, floating rates, fixed rates and all the American mortgage knowledge I did not have. But most importantly explaining and guiding step by step what needs to happen next. Initially from day to day and as we progressed towards closing it became a weekly update with a phone call in between if we needed to. This was a huge learning curve for me but it would have been 10 x times harder without you. If Suzie did not actually speak to me in person on that Saturday I had to apply for pre-qualification r, I may have actually gotten cold feet. I kept thinking - what are you doing - what are you doing - this is never going to get approved! And she could have used simply what I uploaded on the portal, but the fact that Suzie actually picked up the phone and had a personal conversation with me was the deciding factor. She was super positive, supportive, understood and insisted we will find ways around my "foreign" barriers and that gave me confidence to proceed with the prequalification and make an offer. To push through all the admin (wow that was a LOT) Colleen was unbelievable in her organization communication and diligently keeping me on track. I appreciate our in between chats and updates especially when I did not always respond to mails as I was out of the office. You always stayed in touch. Love those status grams. I am going to save them all and many years from now I will still look back at the clarity and comfort they provided me. And I remember how surprised you were about the price of property and property tax & insurance in South Africa when converting it into USD. You must still be wondering - what on earth made me come to the USA if South Africa is so much cheaper :-) And then Joshua, you did the big numbers, big picture but also the fine detail game with me - working through those numbers and options line by line - being questioned by a South African commercial accountant (not even a CPA) about American things she knew nothing about and me possibly sounding slightly lost at times. Your patience was immaculate and thank you for never getting frustrated that it was not only a mortgage deal but also a mortgage 101 lecture and most probably still is. Thank you for guiding me through all the options, from rates to down payments to mortgage insurance etc. Now we only have the down payment value and the interest rate to finalize. To you all - I am well aware that my deal had a lot of complexity involved -you did non only take it in your stride - you did the extra effort and you made it look easy yet I know it was not. All this whilst you had a very uninformed student that you had to train on how to buy a house in the USA! I hope that at some point in time I get to meet each one of you in person as you will forever be part of my journey and memories. You never forget your first home purchase in a foreign country.
