"My daughter and wife joined a while ago to learn self-defense. Mr. Mendoza is an awesome instructor. He has a good balance of strong discipline and being relatable for the younger kids/students to learn well. He ensures everyone knows what they are doing, teaching age-appropriate training as the students move through the ranks. The tournaments are pretty cool, to watch the students perform and compete against other Dojo’s. However, they are not mandatory to attend. The Black Belt Academy teaches strong discipline, self-control, and personal defense, all while keeping all the students well-engaged. Not to mention a great cardio workout during the training. Keep up the great work, Mr. Menodza!"

"I’m really disappointed after bringing my daughter to the “self-defense” kids classes for almost a year. Fermin Mendoza is a good teacher but this establishment’s main priority is money, and to collect as much as possible through testing fees so kids are promoted very fast while learning very little fighting skills. Lots of pressure put on the kids to get stripes and get to the next belt rank. I’ve witnessed students get promoted into advanced classes that still can’t form a correct fist to punch. I’ve seen a new student get a stripe on their belt 30 minutes into their very first class. You do not become a good fighter by getting stripes just for showing up. Most of the kids in the advanced class can’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Kids should be taught groin and knee kicks. Instead, they’re expecting children to execute head kicks on an adult attacker. Nothing being taught on how to fight on the ground, which is where most fights end up. Your kid will spend years training here only to get knocked to the ground and lose a fight. Nothing made sense when I watched these kids classes from the side lines. This is more of a competitive sport for kids to compete for fun, but it’s not practical for real world self-defense, which is what I was told I was paying for. That was a lie."

"I recently was accepted in Black Belt Academy. I am a 45 year old male, who has ptsd from my military service. I could not believe how comfortable with everyone I felt. It is like walking in and visiting family. I got a workout, started learning taekwondo punches and kicks. I actually look forward to Monday and Tuesday evenings now.
