New River Gorge Bridge

"The New River Gorge Bridge is a beautiful, extremely impressive steel arch bridge that’s honestly a feat of human engineering! The arch is over 1,700 feet long and it was the world’s longest single-span arch bridge for over 25 years! It still is the world’s longest outside of China! That means when you see this thing, it is HUGE. Well worth the stop if you happen to be driving anywhere near this area - in fact, such an impressive piece of architecture, I would drive well over and hour to see it and explore the trails around it. This is a beautiful area of West Virginia with mountains and rivers everywhere, and the best part about it is it’s free! So why not stop and see the bridge? It’s one thing driving over it - you really can’t even see that much. It’s a whole different experience if you walk one of the short trails to the vantage points overlooking the bridge. Make the extra effort and do it because you’ll be very happy you did!"

"Hiked up to an overlook to view jumping day! Watched many parachutes open as people jumped off the bridge. Most landed on the beach but some landed in the river. The rescue boats arrived within 30 seconds to help them get out of the cold water with their gear. Saw lots of river rafts in the river too. The bridge was closed all day until 5pm, but the police had it open right on time so we could drive across it and fry on our way. Looked like a well organized event."

"An absolute testament to civil engineering & the American steelworkers, the New River Gorge Bridge is something to behold. Located in the National Park there are many ways to observe the bridge. There is a upper observation deck which is very easy to walk to and access. The lower observation deck offers a different perspective of the bridge. Just know that there is 160 steps to the bottom, and the climb back up can be a bit challenging. There is also a visitors center & museum that offers the history & building of the bridge. A must see! Also there is a “Bridge Walk” experience. You will have a guide and be part of a group that walks the entire 3,030 ft of the bridge. You will be harnessed in and using a maintenance walkway under the bridge. The walk is very scenic, looking down from 876 ft you can enjoy the view of the river & park. I loved the bridge walk a strongly recommended it!!"
