About the Business

The David Weld Sanctuary

The David Weld Sanctuary, located at 687 Short Beach Road in Saint James, New York, is a beautiful park that offers a diverse range of habitats and stunning natural landscapes. Wander through cedar-dotted fields, loop around a red maple swamp, climb a 50-foot bluff overlooking the Long Island Sound, and explore a kettle hole formed by glacial ice melting. With 1,800 feet of beachfront and enormous boulders scattered throughout the woods, the sanctuary provides a peaceful and scenic escape.

Originally donated by Mr. and Mrs. David Weld in the late 20th century, the sanctuary has since expanded with additional land donations and acquisitions. The landscape, shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Age, supports a variety of trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and wildlife, making it a haven for birders, geology enthusiasts, and nature lovers. The 3-mile trail is perfect for hiking and observing nature, with just enough elevation change to keep things interesting.

In spring, the giant tulip trees bloom with greenish-yellow flowers that attract orioles and hummingbirds, while eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies flutter around. Summer brings sightings of bank swallows along the bluff and large boulders exposed along the shore. Autumn showcases a vibrant display of foliage and migratory birds, while winter offers the chance to spot common loons and waterfowl offshore.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful hike, birdwatching opportunities, or simply a serene place to connect with nature, the David Weld Sanctuary is a must-visit destination on Long Island's North Shore. Please note that the sanctuary is open for hiking and observation from dawn to dusk, with limited parking available on-site.

"Got here at 430pm on a Monday and discovered gates lock at 5pm for the small parking lot so didn't get to explore much, especially since trail markings are not good and do not align with the map on the board - map has colors, but some markings are colors and some are yellow and green tags with different trail names"

"While the trails and meadows of the sanctuary are more impressive in summer / early fall, the Sound views are beautiful in all seasons. This time I have also checked Valley trail to Boney Ln and found it overgrown with greenbrier vines and some fallen trees, quite a difference with well maintained and more popular Meadows and Bluffs trails. Parking capacity is definitely a problem with only 6 parking spots and no street parking in the village."

"Update: lost a star due to heavy tick larva/possibly fleas. Major bites... Headed to dermatologist today. Love the park but won't be back until winter. I love this park... It feels like a hug. Small parking lot which holds six cars. Well marked trails... The grass paths are nicely kept... There are several paths that all kind of intersect at one point or another. One leads to the beach, another past a small pond. Some hills, grass, dirt, stumps. Love how quiet and peaceful it is... Lots of birds and deer. A perfect sanctuary. 8/27/2022 Update: still beautiful but experienced a lot of nymph ticks this time out. Spray was useless/stayed on path and still my ankles were covered in them. Ugg. see you after first frost."

"What a hidden gem! So many beautiful trails. The best trail is the one that takes you to the Sound. So quiet and peaceful. Beware: There are only 6 parking spots. Sign says: First come First Served"

"Nice quiet place, very buggy and trails seem like they haven't been maintained in forever. I love the quietness and beauty of nature. There are only 6 parking spots so first come first serve. I truly loved the beauty of the north shore water and cliffs near the beach."
