About the Business

Deer Lick Conservation Area

Deer Lick Conservation Area is a serene park and tourist attraction located at Point Peter Road in Gowanda, New York, United States. Visitors can explore a variety of forest types and rugged canyons within this beautiful preserve. Please note that the area is open for archery hunting only during hunting season (Oct 1 - Dec 22) and written permission is required to hunt on Conservancy lands.

Situated within the Zoar Valley priority conservation landscape, Deer Lick Conservation Area is a designated National Natural Landmark along the South Branch of Cattaraugus Creek. The area offers diverse forest types, from meadow edge pioneer species to old-growth hemlock-northern hardwoods, with striking shale canyon walls to admire during hikes.

While the gorge bottom of the South Branch of Cattaraugus Creek on The Nature Conservancy property is off-limits, visitors can explore the area by hiking downstream from the NYSDEC Forty Road Parking Lot. The Zoar Valley is known for being the northern edge of the American chestnut tree range, with researchers working on developing a blight-resistant variety.

Deer Lick is open from dawn to dusk and features five hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. Keep an eye out for black bears and bald eagles, as well as ancient sugar maple, American beech, and black cherry trees towering over 100 feet tall. Please respect private property boundaries and refrain from bringing alcohol or glass containers into the area.

Managed by The Nature Conservancy, Deer Lick Conservation Area is part of the organization's efforts to protect wildlife and natural systems across the United States. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of this preserve while connecting with the natural world and supporting conservation efforts.

"This place is beautiful! The trails are nicely marked, although there were some blowdowns where I had to navigate around. Make sure you hike all the way to the end and up to see a beautiful gorge view. Awesome place!"

"I couldn't post all the pictures I took, but there are a lot of down trees on the trails and the blue trail is overgrown with weeds and brush but other than that I had a great hike. Only did the white, blue and orange trail so far this year!"

"Great hiking trails and views of the river and gorge. There are several trails to pick from but I recommend the white and yellow trails. The loop is just about 4 miles if you explore to the falls and Bear point. There is a bit of up and down on the trails and on the day I visited a number of downed trees that you will need to navigate along the trail. Additionally, be prepared for a water crossing. The water is normally very shallow but you will get your feet wet. Be careful when crossing the bridge as it does have a bit of a lean to it."

"1st time. Didn't have much time, i kind of just ran through it. Nice leg burning trail, muddy at some point at hill bottoms, with a few streams running through it. The ridge is a bit narly, if not careful can take a tumble off the cliff."

"This was a great park and a good hike. The view of the gorge is not anywhere what you see at zoar, but is really amazing in it's own right. Cute waterfalls to walk around also. Some longer and shorter hikes available."
